Troubleshooting 2 November 2023

We all know how costly it is to have a reappearing quality problem in a factory. We also know how much pressure that can be put on the factory staff to solve the issue fast. There are many different approaches to solve problems. One of the well-known and frequently used is the Six sigma DMAIC process.

Based on our years of experience the most challenging part is the “A” analyse. In other words, finding the root cause. This has also been recognised by quality developers so many root cause analysis methods have been developed like the 5 why’s, the fish bone and other flow charts.

A structured systematic approach is needed however it is also time consuming and may not always solve the problem. One reason for that is the definition of factors of influence (or identifying the cause of the problem) requires knowledge and experience as well as an open mind. Sometimes a pair of fresh eyes is also needed.

So, if you have a stubborn quality problem – do not hesitate to bring more knowledge and experience onboard, especially if you have a relatively inexperienced staff.
