The Biden Administration is making multiple moves to make Infant formula available for

families in need.

Those measures are aimed at ensuring that families in need can continue to buy baby formula with WIC benefits during a public health emergency or supply chain issues such as a product recall. WIC refers to the federal assistance program known as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC served about 6.2 million participants each month in fiscal year 2021, including an estimated 43 percent of all infants in the United States. Federal program costs for WIC totalled $5 billion in fiscal year 2021.

The sad reality in many medium and low-income countries without a similar program is that infant formula is not available for many infants as the costs are too high for low-income families. So, what do mothers do if they cannot breastfeed? Going to a human milk bank or getting donor milk from another mother is according to WHO the best option. Sadly, if this is not possible mothers serve home modified milk or plant-based product to their infants e.g. modified from whole milk powder, sweet condensed milk, rice or soy drinks. The risks to the infant’s health, development and growths are obvious ☹ and is certainly not a good start for a new life.

Infant formulas have improved a lot for the last decades by using costly ingredients (like HOS, DHA, Alphalactalbmin, Infat etc.) to minimize the health gabs compared to using mother’s milk. These improvements come with costs – costs that some mothers cannot afford to pay. Besides education and political reforms to favour breastfeeding and give access to donor milk it is important that the infant formula industry does not stop or forget to develop the concept of affordable Infant formulas. Affordability should be the aim also in all aspects of the supply chain.
